The share of thermal power generation in China continues to remain high as a proportion in the country’s total energy basket. Thermal power generation capacity, i.e. through burning of fossil fuels, reached 1,270 GW in the Jan-Jul’21 period, an increase of 3.4%, y-o-y, China’s National Bureau of Statistics data reveal. China’s cumulative power capacity, from across all sources, stood at 2,270 GW during the same period, up 9.4%, y-o-y. Notably, in end-2020, China’s coal-based power capacity was at 1,095 GW, falling below 50% in the country’s total power mix for the first time in history.
