According to market sources, the gap between China’s thermal coal supply (domestic + imports) and demand expanded to 23.5 mn t in Jul’21 compared to 7.7 mn t in Jul’20. Supply shortage in July this year has been close to that in the peak winter months of Nov-Dec’20 which were 25.1 mn t and 29.8 mn t, respectively. China’s coal production is expected to increase in Sept against the previous months as NDRC has given approval for 15 coal mines to start operations. However, supplies are unlikely to be enough to fill the gap, sources informed.
