China: steel inventories rise in early-August despite production controls

  • CISA mill inventories rise 5.6% amid disruptions.
  • Crude steel output rises, finished steel production declines.

The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) reported that total steel inventories at key CISA-affiliated mills stood at around 17.18 million tonnes (mnt) during early-August (1-10 August 2026), marking an increase of 910,000 tonnes (t) or 5.6% from 16.28 mnt in late-July, highlighting continued inventory pressure.

The rise came despite phased production controls, as typhoons and heavy rainfall disrupted logistics and halted construction activity in several regions. Any short-term improvement in apparent demand is likely distorted by these disruptions rather than reflecting a genuine recovery in end-user consumption.

Moreover, inventory levels rose by 410,000 t or 2.4% m-o-m from 16.77 mnt recorded in the same period last month. Furthermore, on a yearly basis inventories rose by 2.11 mnt or 14% y-o-y compared with 15.07 mnt recorded in early-August 2025

Production volumes

The average daily crude steel production of CISA-affiliated mills stood at around 1.973 mnt in early-August up by 5.8% from 1.86 mnt recorded in late-July. However, crude steel output decreased by 4.9% y-o-y.

Average daily finished steel output stood at around 1.819 mnt in early-August, down by 8.2% from 1.982 mnt in late-July. Furthermore, finished steel output declined by 9.3% y-o-y from late-July 2025.

Average daily pig iron output stood at 1.85 mnt in early-August, up by 5.5% from 1.754 mnt in late-July. Furthermore, pig iron production was down by 3.4% y-o-y.
