China: Steel inventories at CISA mills rise 3.2% in early-Jun’25

  • Daily crude steel output rises 3.2% against late-May
  • Daily finished steel output drops 6.4% in same period

The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) has announced that the total steel inventory at key Chinese enterprises in early-June 2025 stood at 15.79 million tonnes (mnt), up by 490,000 tonnes (t) or 3.2% as compared to 15.3 mnt in late-May 2025. Meanwhile, steel inventories dropped by 270,000 t or 1.7% against 16.06 mnt a month ago.

Moreover, inventories decreased by 300,000 t or 1.9% from 16.08 mnt a year ago.

Production volumes

The average daily crude steel output of CISA-affiliated mills stood at 2.159 mnt in early-June, up by 3.2% against 2.09 mnt in late-May. However, the same decreased by 4% from 2.248 mnt a year ago.

The average daily finished steel output reached 2.037 mnt in early-June, down by 6.4% from 2.17 mnt in late-May. Furthermore, the same dropped by 3.9% y-o-y.

Average pig iron output stood at 1.963 mnt in early-June, reflecting a rise of 2.6% against 1.91 mnt in late-May. In contrast, output declined by 1.3% y-o-y.

Outlook

China’s steel industry outlook remains cautious, with inventory and crude steel production growth (against late-May) balanced by finished steel output weakness, keeping sentiment neutral to positive amid market uncertainty.
