On August 1, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the National Development and Reform Commission, jointly released an implementation plan for the domestic industrial sector to reach carbon emission peak.
As far as the ferrous and non-ferrous sectors are concerned, the plan noted that China will see all qualified steel scrapyards nationwide to host over 180 million tonnes/year of processing capacity by 2025 and electric-arc-furnace-route production to account for 20% of the country’s total steel output by 2030.
Chinese output of secondary copper and secondary aluminum will also increase to 4 million and 11.5 million tonnes respectively by 2025, Mysteel Global learned from the plan.
Since 2013, China has released nine lists of qualified steel scrap suppliers totaling 584 in number to satisfy the growing needs for scrap, as reported. And by the end of 2021, the 584 scrapyards approved by MIIT were operating around 150 million t/y of processing capacity in total, accounting for 50-60% of Chinese total scrap resources, Mysteel Global noted.
Moreover, the latest implementation plan also identified six major aspects for the domestic industrial industry to reach carbon peak, among which included the optimization of industrial structure, the progression of energy-saving and carbon reduction, the introduction of green manufacturing, the development of circular economy, and the promotion of digital transformation in the industrial sector.
