China negotiating with EU over planned steel tariff measures

Mysteel Global: China is negotiating with the European Union (EU) under the WTO framework over the bloc’s planned new steel tariff measures due to take effect on 1 July, the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) said on 28 May.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, MoC spokesperson He Yadong said the EU’s planned measures are “protectionist in nature” and could disrupt China-EU steel trade and global industrial supply chains.

China expects to reach a win-win outcome through negotiations and maintain stable bilateral trade ties, He said.

“If the EU adopts discriminatory measures against Chinese companies and products, China will take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” He added.

The comments came as the EU prepares to implement its new steel safeguard regime from 1 July, which will tighten import restrictions and raise out-of-quota duties on steel products.
