China: Crude iron ore production rises 9%, y-o-y, in June

China, the world’s largest consumer and importer of iron ore, has recorded run of mine (ROM) iron ore production at 98.71 million tonnes (mnt) in June 2022, up 9% y-o-y, according to data by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The yearly output witnessed an increase as June 2021 production remained low due to steel production cuts, with uncertainties lingering on both the supply and demand sides.

In January-June 2022 period, the country’s ROM iron ore output was recorded at 501.21 mnt, a decrease of 3% y-o-y.

Production in major ore-producing provinces: Raw iron ore output from the eight major ore-producing provinces – Hebei, Liaoning, Sichuan, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Anhui, Shandong, and Xinjiang – was recorded at 88.89 mnt in June 2022, increasing by 12.17 mnt or 16% y-o-y. Output from these provinces contributed to 90% of China’s total output.

In January-June 2022, the cumulative iron ore output from the eight major mine-producing provinces stood at 441.02 mnt, a 3% increase y-o-y.
