Chhattisgarh caps Iron ore supply from NMDC outside the state

The Chhattisgarh government on Tuesday has said that the state-run
National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) should export the steel-making
raw material only after meeting the state's ore requirement. NMDC has a major
operation in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district. Of the three fully mechnaised
mines that it own, two are located in Bailadila sector mines of Naxal-infested
Dantewada district.

In a similar move some time back, the Odisha Government had restricted permits for Iron ore to sponge iron plants located outside the state,
citing it as a move to check the illegal mining.

Irregularity in iron ore supply from quite some time has
been the major reason behind rising steel prices across the country. So, the
recent move by the Chhattisgarh government will further limit the supply of
Iron ore to sponge iron plants located outside the Iron rich states.
