CEC submitted its report on Karnataka mining

  • Central Empowered
Committee (CEC) has submitted its report on Karnataka mining to Supreme Court
and recommended some changes for mining in the state.
  • The
Committee has recommended cancellation of 49 mine leases involved in major
violation and asked for auction of licenses for these mines. The said mines
have a capacity to produce nearly 10mn tonnes of iron ore per annum.
  • Nearly

operate the mines after paying suggested penalty. This money will be used for
Sustainable Mining Development Fund and for establishing infrastructure in that
    region.
  • CEC
also agreed with ICFRE recommendation of 30mn tonnes of production per annum in
    the state.
  • Next
hearing of Supreme Court on the matter to be held on 10th February, 2012 (Friday).
