Committee (CEC) has submitted its report on Karnataka mining to Supreme Court
and recommended some changes for mining in the state. - The
Committee has recommended cancellation of 49 mine leases involved in major
violation and asked for auction of licenses for these mines. The said mines
have a capacity to produce nearly 10mn tonnes of iron ore per annum. - Nearly
45mines have been given a clean chit and can resume their operations the moment
ban is lifted from the state. 72 other mines observed in minor violations can
operate the mines after paying suggested penalty. This money will be used for
Sustainable Mining Development Fund and for establishing infrastructure in that
region. - CEC
also agreed with ICFRE recommendation of 30mn tonnes of production per annum in
the state. - Next
hearing of Supreme Court on the matter to be held on 10th February, 2012 (Friday).
