CEC submits final report on illegal mining in Odisha; Find irregularities

Bhubaneswar: The Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has submitted its final report to the Supreme Court. In the report the panel has stated that there have been rampant irregularities in iron ore mining. During the period 2000-01 to 2010-11 total 213 million tonnes of iron ore and 2.4 mt manganese have been raised without lawful authority. Miners have raised minerals without environment and forest clearance. Miners that have found involved in illegal mining includes OMC, Tata, Essel Mining etc. 

The CEC has also found that rule 37 of the MCR has also been violated. The CEC has held the state government responsible for the illegality to some extent. The CEC has recommended that 30% of the value of mineral raised without ec should be collected from the miners. Similarly 70% of the notional value of the mineral raised without forest clearance and Rs. 5 Crore per acre in case of excess mining should be collected.
