Canada: Iron Ore Exports Stable in CY’17

Trade statistics released by Canada customs shows that the iron ore exports by the country were recorded at 3.77 MnT in Dec’17. In CY’17, the exports remained almost stable at 41.12 MnT compared to 41.05 MnT in CY’16.

China recorded to be the largest importer in CY’17 at 7.1 MnT, down 17% as compared to 8.58 MnT in CY’16, followed by France at 6.11 MnT (up 8% Y-o-Y), and Japan at 5.93 MnT (up 13% Y-o-Y).

The iron ore exports recorded decline of 9% M-o-M in Dec’17, as against 4.16 MnT in Nov’17. The Y-o-Y exports in Dec’17 witnessed an increase of 27% compared to Dec’16 which stood at 2.98 MnT.

The non-agglomerated ore (Lumps and Fines) witnessed decline of 37% to 1.84 MnT in Dec’17 as against 2.93 MnT in Nov’17. However, the Y-o-Y exports recorded a marginal increase of 3% in Dec’17 as against 1.78 MnT in Dec’16.

Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) exports recorded significant increase of 56% to 1.92 MnT in Dec’17 as against 1.23 MnT in Nov’17. The Y-o-Y exports also recorded increase, of 59% in Dec’17 as compared to Dec’16 which stood at 1.21 MnT.

Country- wise Canada Iron Ore Exports-

China continues to remain the largest iron ore importer from Canada in the month of Dec’17 at 0.83 MnT (down 20% M-o-M), contributing 22% of total exports from Canada, followed by Japan at 0.49 MnT (down 40% M-o-M), France at 0.47 MnT (up 47% M-o-M) and Netherland at 0.34 MnT.
