Trade statistics released by Canada custom shows that the iron ore exports by the country recorded at 1.96 MnT in May’18. The exports witnessed decline of 39% M-o-M as against 3.23 MnT in Apr’18.
At IOC (Iron Ore Company of Canada), the revised guidance for 2018 production is 10.3 to 11.3 MnT of iron ore pellets and concentrates (previously 11.5 to 12.5 MnT). The local union workforce voted to strike and operations were suspended from that date.
On yearly basis, the exports depicted significant decline by 44% as compared to May’17 exports at 3.48 MnT.
For the duration Jan-May’18, Canadian iron ore exports recorded at 14.34 MnT, down 5% against same period last year (Jan-May’17) at 15.02 MnT.
The non-agglomerated ore (Lumps and Fines) depicted fall of 23% M-o-M to 1.77 MnT in May’18 as against 2.3 MnT in Apr’18. The Y-o-Y exports marked 24% decrease as against May’17 exports at 2.34 MnT.
Agglomerated ore (pellets and concentrates) exports in May’18 witnessed a sharp decline of 79% to 0.19 MnT, as compared to Apr’18 exports at 0.92 MnT. The Y-o-Y exports depicted decline of 83% in May’18 as against May’17 exports at 1.14 MnT.
Canadian iron ore export to China reduced to half on monthly basis
China imports of Canadian iron ore reduced by 56% M-o-M to 0.31 MnT as against 0.71 MnT a month ago.
Japan stood the largest importer of Canadian iron ore in May’18 at 0.66 MnT, up 32% as against last month imports at 0.5 MnT. Germany stood the second largest importer at 0.34 MnT (up 36% M-o-M).
Belgium and France recorded significant decline in imports for the month at 0.15 MnT (down 35% M-o-M) and 0.09 MnT (fall of 85% on monthly basis) respectively.
