Canada- one of the world’s major scrap exporters witnessed a marginal rise in scrap exports in Oct’18 as against Sept’18. As per recent customs data, Canada exported 439,558 MT ferrous scrap in Oct’18, up 5% M-o-M as against 419,572 MT ferrous scrap in Sept’18.
On yearly premises, Canadian scrap exports declined marginally by 4% Y-o-Y as against 457,446 MT ferrous scrap recorded in Oct’17.
US remained the largest importer of Canadian ferrous scrap – US remained the largest importer occupying highest 70% share (309,236 MT, -2% M-o-M) in total scrap exports in Oct’18. Followed by other major importers were Turkey (52,500 MT, +2% M-o-M), Taiwan (19,696 MT, +48% M-o-M), Peru (28,000 MT) and India (12,348 MT, +8% M-o-M). While Mexico and Brazil observed almost nil import volumes from Canada for the second consecutive month in Oct’18.
According to World Steel Association, country’s crude steel production recorded at 1.16 MnT, up 4% M-o-M in Oct’18. On the other hand, the country observed a significant fall of 25% M-o-M in Iron ore exports in Oct’18. Canada exported 5.10 MnT iron ore in Oct’18 as against 6.79 MnT in Sept’18.
Scrap exports rose 23% Y-o-Y during Jan-Oct’18 – Majorly on rising Turkish imports as compared to last year, Canada witnessed 22% Y-o-Y increase in scrap exports during Jan-Oct’18. It exported 4.21 MnT ferrous scrap in Jan-Oct’18 as against 3.43 MnT during the same period last year. Turkey remained the second largest importer (0.70 MnT, +80% Y-o-Y) after the largest importer, USA (2.83 MnT, +10% Y-o-Y) during Jan-Oct’18.
Canada produced 10.79 MnT crude steel during Jan-Oct’18, down 5% as compared to 11.30 MnT crude steel produced during the same period last year. Despite high average global scrap export prices as compared to last year, the demand for high-grade scrap from Canada increased significantly from major importers like Turkey, Brazil, Taiwan and India in CY18.
