Canadian coal exports have rebounded in Aug’18 after falling in the month of Jul’18.
As per the data provided by customs, Canadian coal export was recorded at 2.81 MnT in Aug’18, up 9% on the month from 2.58 MnT in Jul’18. On the yearly basis, exports were 9% lower than the levels attained in Aug’17.
The month of Aug’18 had seen exports of Bituminous coal rising 10% M-o-M to 2.43 MnT, while pet coke exports remained almost stable at 0.38 MnT during the month.
Total coal exports from the country during the first 8-months of CY18 (Jan’18-Aug’18) have fallen 4% Y-o-Y to 22.03 MnT compared with 22.85 MnT in same period last year.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan regained its position as the largest coal receiver from Canada with imports of 0.55 MnT in Aug’18. Monthly import from the country had increased 72% M-o-M from 0.32 MnT in Jul’18, but was 35% lower on the year compared with 0.84 MnT in Aug’17.
South Korea remained the second-largest coal receiver, who likewise Japan, has witnessed imports rising on the month but down on the y-o-y basis in Aug’18. Country’s coal import was 0.51 MnT, up 19% M-o-M from 0.43 MnT in Jul’18, but down 45% Y-o-Y from 0.93 MnT in Aug’17.
China dropped to third in the list, with a slight fall in imports. The country had received 0.43 MnT coal in Aug’18 against 0.44 MnT in Jul’18.
US, Vietnam, Poland and India were among the other major coal receivers during the month.
