Canadian coal export has rebounded after falling to the 8-month low in Oct’17, to reach 2.13 MnT in Nov’17. Coal exports had increased 8% M-o-M from 1.98 MnT in Oct’17, as per the data provided by customs.
However, on the yearly basis, exports had decreased 33% compared to 3.18 MnT coal in Nov’16. It was the second consecutive month that the exports were down on the Y-o-Y basis.
Total coal shipments from Canada stood 30.04 MnT during the Jan’17-Nov’17 period, which were slightly lower than the export of 30.97 MnT coal recorded during the same period in 2016.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Canada had exported only two grades of coal during the month namely- Bituminous coal and Pet coke.
Export of Bituminous coal had increased 12% M-o-M to 1.86 MnT in Nov’17, while exports of Pet coke fell 7% on the month to 0.27 MnT.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the major importer of Canadian coal in Nov’17, followed by India, South Korea and Japan. All the above nations had recorded growth in monthly coal imports from Canada in Nov’17, however, their respective imports were down from the year-ago month.
Japan had received 0.5 MnT coal in Nov’17, up 32% M-o-M from 0.38 MnT in Oct’17, but were down 53% Y-o-Y compared with 1.07 MnT in Nov’16.
India was the second-largest coal receiver during the month with imports of 0.4 MnT coal. Imports rose 67% M-o-M compared with 0.24 MnT in Oct’17.
South Korean coal imports were recorded 0.34 MnT in Nov’17. While China had witnessed the highest gain on the monthly basis, as imports from the country rose from 0.04 MnT in Oct’17 to 0.3 MnT in Nov’17.
