Canadian coal exports have increased 6% Y-o-Y to 17.59 MnT during the first half of CY19 (Jan-Jul’19) compared with 16.64 MnT in the corresponding period of CY18.
On the monthly basis, export volumes continued its rising steak to record 28% growth during Jun’19. Data provided by Canadian customs indicate that coal exports by the country was recorded at 3.61 MnT in Jun’19 against 2.83 MnT in May’19, which was also 3% higher on the year from 3.51 MnT in Jun’18.
Over the period, bituminous coal comprising chiefly of coking grade, had accounted for 88% in total export volume. Exports of bituminous coal increased 7% on the year to 15.54 MnT in H1 CY19.
Pet coke was the other noticeable traded coal commodity in the period, whose exports up-ticked 5% on the year to 2.01 MnT.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest coal buyers of Canadian coal in the first half year period of CY19. Coal shipments to Japan totaled 3.61 MnT in H1 CY19, down 7% on the year from 3.88 MnT noted in the same period last year.
Exports to South Korea helped balance out the reduced volumes to Japan, as Canadian coal shipments to South Korea grew 5% Y-o-Y to 3.14 MnT in the first half period.
Indian coal sourcing from Canada rose 36% on the year to 2.93 MnT in H1 CY19, as the country increasingly diversify its import source- alternative to the Australian market.
Canadian export demand was driven by a significant ramp up in shipments to China, which had surged 47% Y-o-Y to 2.29 MnT in H1 CY19. In fact, during the month of Jun’19, China had emerged as the largest importer of Canadian coal, while attaining its highest shipment since Jul’17.
