Canada: Coal Exports Up 6% Y-o-Y in H1 CY17

Canada, among the top 10 major coal exporters in the world, has recorded growth in coal exports during the first half of CY17, compared with the exports in same period of the year CY16.

Coal exports have increased 6% on the yearly basis to 17.04 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17, compared with 16.13 MnT in Jan’16-Jun’16, according to the Canadian customs data.

Canada’s monthly coal export in Jun’17 has marginally increased by 2% to 3.13 MnT, compared with 3.08 MnT in May’17. Moreover, the Jun’17 export was 15% higher than the coal export of 2.72 MnT recorded during Jun’16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Bituminous Coal was the major exported coal grade from Canada during H1 CY17, having a share of more than 86% in the total coal exports during the period.

Exports of Bituminous coal increased 3% Y-o-Y to 14.74 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17.

Pet Coke is the second-largest exported coal grade from the country. Export of this fuel has surged by 29% to 2.29 MnT during H1 CY17.

Major Coal Importer:
Japan remained the top coal importer from Canada in H1 CY17, followed by South Korea, China, USA, India and Taiwan. It may be noted that the rankings of the top 6 coal importer from Canada have not changed from H1 CY16.

Japan, the largest coal importer, has witnessed a decline of 4% Y-o-Y in coal imports to 3.73 MnT in H1 CY17.

South Korea was the second largest coal importer during H1 CY17; the country’s imports have increased 9% Y-o-Y to 3.2 MnT, compared with 2.93 MnT during H1 CY16.

China’s coal imports has fallen 28% Y-o-Y to 2.45 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17.
