Canada: Coal Exports Up 21% M-o-M in Feb’18

Canadian coal exports totaled 2.65 MnT in Feb’18, rising 21% on the month from 2.19 MnT in Jan’18. On the yearly basis, coal volume exported from the country was 51% higher than the exports of 1.75 MnT coal, recorded in Feb’17.

Total coal exports stood 4.84 MnT during Jan’18-Feb’18, up 16% Y-o-Y compared to 4.18 MnT coal recorded during the corresponding period of previous year.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Exports of the majorly shipped coal grades-Bituminous and Pet coke had increased on the monthly basis. Bituminous coal exports were marked 21% higher on the month at 2.35 MnT in Feb’18.

Pet coke exports too had improved on the month, from 0.24 MnT in Jan’18 to 0.25 MnT in Feb’18.

Country’s Met coke export remained weak in Feb’18, as only a mere quantity of 102 MT was shipped during the month.

Major Coal Importers:
South Korea overtook Japan to become the largest coal importer in Feb’18. South Korean coal imports rose 51% on the month to 0.62 MnT in Feb’18, which had almost doubled from the year-ago month’s import of 0.3 MnT.

Coal import from Japan had slipped 16% on the month to 0.46 MnT, which was also the only monthly decline seen among the top 6 major coal importing countries in Feb’18.

China had recorded a remarkable growth of 314% in monthly coal sourcing from Canada. The country had imported 0.29 MnT coal in Feb’18.

Vietnam emerged as one the major coal importer during the month, with the imports of 0.26 MnT coal in Feb’18. This was the country’s first import shipment from Canada in CY18, which was even marked higher than India’s monthly import total of 0.24 MnT coal, with India being one of the major importer of Canadian coal.

US, Turkey, Taiwan, Brazil and Netherlands were among the other major coal importers in Feb’18.
