Canadian coal imports have rose 19% on the month to 3.34 MnT in Sep’18, compared with 2.81 MnT in Aug’18. According to the data provided by customs, monthly export in Sep’18 was marked second-highest for the CY18 behind Jun’18, as a result of rise in imports from its major customers-Japan, South Korea and India.
Total exports, which majorly include Bituminous coal and Pet Coke, were also 8% higher on the year from 3.08 MnT recorded in the year-ago month.
During the first nine months of the year (Jan’18-Sep’18), 25.38 MnT has been shipped out of the country, which has slightly fallen on the year from 25.93 MnT in the same period of CY17.
Canada’s Bituminous coal exports totaled 3.01 MnT in Sep’18, equalling its previous highest total for CY18. Exports had increased 24% on the month from 2.43 MnT in Aug’18.
Pet Coke exports were down 29% M-o-M to 0.27 MnT in Sep’18.
Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the largest coal buyer from Canada in Sep’18.Monthly imports recorded at 0.71 MnT in Sep’18 was up 29% M-o-M from 0.55 MnT in Aug’18, also 3% higher on the year from 0.69 MnT in Sep’17.
India boosted coal supplies from Canada amid shortage of coal supply in domestic market. With a remarkable growth of 338% M-o-M in Sep’18, India had become the second-largest coal importer in Sep’18. In the first 9-months of CY18, the country had taken 3.17 MnT coal from Canada and will soon surpass its previous year total of 3.32 MnT attained in CY17.
South Korea was the third-largest coal importer in Sep’18. The country had received 0.69 MnT coal in the month rising from 0.51 MnT in Aug’18.
China and the US had witnessed a fall in monthly imports which were recorded at 0.34 MnT and 0.24 MnT respectively in Sep’18.
