According to the customs data, Canadian coal exports has remained almost constant during the month, with total quantity accounting to 3.08 MnT in Sep’17 against 3.09 MnT in Aug’17. Monthly exports were however 15% higher on the year than the corresponding value of 2.67 MnT recorded in Sep’16.
During the first 9 months of CY17 (Jan’17-Sep’17), Canadian coal exports have increased to 25.93 MnT, up 4% Y-o-Y compared with 24.92 MnT coal exported during Jan’16-Sep’16 period.
Grade-wise Exports:
Canada had exported two grades of coal during the month namely-Bituminous coal and Pet coke.
While Bituminous coal exports had increased 3% M-o-M to 2.71 MnT in Sep’17, Pet coke exports had fallen 23% M-o-M to 0.36 MnT compared with 0.47 MnT in Aug’17.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
Despite witnessing decline of 18% on the month, Japan was the major coal importer from Canada replacing South Korea. Japanese coal imports was 0.69 MnT in Sep’17, up 21% Y-o-Y compared with 0.57 MnT in Sep’16.
South Korea move down to the number 2 spot, with coal import falling 48% M-o-M to 0.48 MnT in Sep’17. On the yearly basis, import from the country was also down 2% compared with 0.49 MnT in Sep’16.
China was the third-largest coal importer during the month. Coal imports from the country had also fallen both on the monthly and yearly basis to 0.35 MnT in Sep’17.
Indian coal imports from Canada rose 80% on the month to 0.27 MnT in Sep’17. The country had imported mere 0.08 MnT coal from Canada in Sep’16.
In order to reduce dependency on Australian coal, India has increased coal sourcing from Canada. So far, India has imported 2.36 MnT coal from Canada in CY17 (till Sep’17), up 30% Y-o-Y compared with 1.82 MnT coal imported during Jan’16-Sep’16 period.
