Canada: Coal Exports Down 3% Y-o-Y in CY17

According to the data provided by Canadian customs, coal exports from the country has fallen 3% Y-o-Y to 32.87 MnT in 2017. The country had exported 33.91 MnT coal in 2016.

Canadian coal exports had witnessed drastic fall during the last quarter of CY17. Exports during Oct’17 had dropped to a 8-month low of 1.98 MnT. Although, exports had recovered in the month of Dec’17 by posting a growth of 32% M-o-M to 2.82 MnT, yet it was still 4% lower on the year compared with 2.94 MnT in Dec’16.

The country had totaled exports of 6.93 MnT coal during Oct’17-Dec’17, which was 23% lower than the total of 8.99 MnT recorded in Oct’16-Dec’16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Bituminous coal exports having a share of more than 85% in the country’s total export, had fell 6% Y-o-Y to 28.61 MnT in CY17, compared with 30.44 MnT in CY16.

Pet coke shipments had increased 23% Y-o-Y to 4.2 MnT in CY17; the country had also exported small quantity of Met coke during the year.

Major Coal Importers:
Japan remained the highest coal receiver from Canada in CY17, followed by South Korea and China. However, all these countries had witnessed drop in coal intake during the year.

Japanese coal imports had fell 13% Y-o-Y to 7.22 MnT in CY17, compared with 8.29 MnT in CY16. Likewise, South Korea and China had recorded similar fall of 1% and 15% respectively, during the year.

India was the fourth-largest coal importer in CY17.  India had registered a growth of 10% Y-o-Y in imports, to procure 3.32 MnT coal from Canada in CY17. Canada became an alternative source of Coking coal for the Indian buyers, whose supply was often been affected due to the disruptions in Australia.

US, Taiwan, Brazil, Ukraine and Netherlands were among the other major coal importers during the year.
