Canada: Coal Exports Down 29% M-o-M in Oct’19

Canadian coal exports have dropped 29% on the month to record a 5-month low total during Oct’19. Data provided by customs indicate that exports from the country stood 2.87 MnT in Oct’19 as against 4.04 MnT in Sep’19.

The month of October generally depicts a fall in export volume, as seen from the pattern followed in the past few years. However, exports in Oct’19 was still marked 24% higher on the year from 2.32 MnT noted in Oct’18.

Canadian bituminous coal which constitutes a major part of the exports, had fell to a 6-month low of 2.42 MnT in Oct’19, declining 34% on the month from 3.67 MnT in Sep’19. However, exports of pet coke increased 22% M-o-M to 0.45 MnT in Oct’19.

Major Coal Importers:

South Korea remained the largest coal buyer from Canada in Oct’19, followed by Japan and China. Though, all the major importers had witness a hefty decline in coal sourcing during the month.

South Korean coal receipt from Canada decreased 26% M-o-M to 0.82 MnT in Oct’19 compared with 1.11 MnT in Sep’19. Import volume had noted an exponential growth of 310% on the year from 0.2 MnT in Oct’18.

Japanese coal imports were down 38% M-o-M to 0.54 MnT in Oct’19 which were also marked 42% lower on the year from 0.93 MnT in Oct’18.

Chinese coal imports fell 49% M-o-M to 0.34 MnT in Oct’19, but had managed a significant growth Y-o-Y from the levels attained in the year-ago month.

During the first 10 months of CY19 (Jan-Oct’19), Canadian coal exports have reached 30.83 MnT, up 11% Y-o-Y from 27.69 MnT noted in Jan-Oct’18 period.
