Canada coal exports suffer downfall both on the monthly and yearly basis.
Canada coal exports have fallen to 1.75 MnT in Feb’17 against 2.43 MnT in Jan’17, registering a decline of 28% M-o-M. Exports were also down by 27% Y-o-Y compared with 2.43 MnT in Feb’16, according to the data provided by Canadian Customs.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Canada majorly exports Bituminous and Pet Coke, along with small quantities of Coke & semi-coke and other grades of coal.
During Feb’17, Bituminous coal exports drop by 27% M-o-M to 1.54 MnT, also Pet coke exports fell 38% M-o-M to 0.20 MnT. While a very nominal amount of other grades of coal was exported out of the country during the month.

Quantities in MnT
Major Importing Countries:
Japan was the major coal importer of Canadian coal in Feb’17 followed by Taiwan, China, Korea and USA.
Japan became top coal importing country from Canada in Feb’17, overtaking South Korea whose imports have fallen by 55% M-o-M after the Korean Government plans to increase tax on coal consumption.
However, Coal imports from Japan decreased by 27% M-o-M to 0.36 MnT in Feb’17. Imports also fell on the yearly basis by 43% compared with 0.63 MnT in Feb’16.
Taiwan showed remarkable improvement in their monthly coal imports by registering a growth of 261% M-o-M. Taiwan received 0.32 MnT coal in Feb’17 against 0.09 MnT in Jan’17, thus becoming second –largest coal importer from Canada in Feb’17.
China third-largest coal importer, recorded growth of 234% M-o-M in their monthly coal imports. The country has imported 0.30 MnT in Feb’17.However, imports have reduced to half compared on the yearly basis with 0.60 MnT in Feb’16.
