Canadian coal exports have fallen 26% on the month in Jul’18, after witnessing its highest total for CY18 in the preceding month.
As per the data provided by Canadian customs, coal export by the country in Jul’18 was 2.58 MnT against 3.51 MnT in Jun’18, which was also 5% lower on the year from 2.72 MnT in Jul’17.
The decline in Canada’s exports had came on the back of rather subdued import from its largest coal receiver-Japan, while import from its other major customers-South Korea and India was also down in the month.
During the first 7 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Jul’18), the country has exported 19.22 MnT coal, which had decreased 3% on the year from 19.76 MnT recorded in the same period last year.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
During Jul’18, exports of both Bituminous and Pet coke had decreased on the month basis.
Canadian export of Bituminous coal fell 27% M-o-M to 2.2 MnT, while Pet Coke exports were down 24% on the month to 0.38 MnT in Jul’18.
Major Coal Importers:
China was the largest coal receiver from Canada in Jul’18. The country had witness a marginal increase of 2% M-o-M to record 0.44 MnT coal imports in Jul’18, which notably was the highest monthly total for CY18. However, on the yearly basis, imports were down 36% from 0.69 MnT in Jul’17.
South Korea remained the second-largest receiver of Canadian coal despite suffering a 33% decline in monthly imports. Imports in Jul’18 were recorded at 0.43 MnT against 0.64 MnT in Jun’18, but were 30% higher on the year from 0.33 MnT in Jul’17.
US was the third-largest coal receiver in Jul’18, with imports rising 17% M-o-M to 0.34 MnT during the month.
Canada’s largest coal customer-Japan had recorded a 67% decline in monthly imports to receive 0.32 MnT coal in Jul’18. Netherlands, Taiwan, India and Finland were among the other major coal importers during the month.
