Canadian coal exports have fallen 23% on the month, following weaker imports from its major importers in Apr’18.
According to the data provided by Canadian customs, coal export from the country had dropped to 2.36 MnT in Apr’18 against 3.06 MnT in Mar’18. Exports were also 25% lower on the year compared with 3.13 MnT in Apr’17.
Canadian coal export to its major consumer, Japan, had fell to a 9-month low total of 0.2 MnT in Apr’18, decreasing 82% M-o-M from 1.13 MnT in Mar’18. Moreover, coal exports to its other major customers-South Korea, US and China had also declined during the month.
Canadian coal export had totaled 10.26 MnT during the first 4 months of CY18 (Jan’18-Apr’18), down 5% Y-o-Y compared with 10.83 MnT in Jan’17-Apr’17.
Grade-wise Coal Export:
Bituminous coal export from the country had decreased 23% M-o-M to 2.03 MnT in Apr’18, compared with 2.65 MnT in Mar’18. Pet coke export was down 39% M-o-M to 0.25 MnT in Apr’18.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
India was the largest coal receiver from Canada in Apr’18, followed by South Korea, US, China and Vietnam.
Indian coal import had increased 50% M-o-M to 0.39 MnT in Apr’18, compared with 0.26 MnT in Mar’18. Imports were also 56% higher on the year compared with 0.25 MnT in Apr’17.
South Korea was the second-largest coal receiver, with imports of 0.29 MnT coal in Apr’18. Korean imports had fell 47% M-o-M from 0.55 MnT in Mar’18, which was also 46% lower on the year compared with 0.54 MnT in Apr’17.
US was the third-largest coal importer. The country had received 0.27 MnT coal from Canada in Apr’18, down 10% M-o-M from 0.3 MnT in Mar’18.
