Canadian coal exports have dropped 17% on the month, following a drastic fall in coal intake from India during Feb’19.
Data provided by Canadian customs indicates that exports had decreased to 2.13 MnT in Feb’19 as against 2.58 MnT in Jan’19, which was also 20% lower on the year from 2.65 MnT in Feb’18.
Canada’s major coal importers-Japan and South Korea, both had posted noticeable rise on the monthly basis, but it was still not enough to overcome the slump in coal shipments that were recorded to India in Feb’19.
Indian coal import from Canada fell 78% M-o-M to 0.1 MnT in Feb’19 as against 0.45 MnT in Jan’19.
A grade-wise break-wise of exports indicates that Bituminous coal shipments were down 16% M-o-M to 1.86 MnT in Feb’19. Remaining exports comprised of Pet coke, had decreased 25% M-o-M.
Major Coal Importers:
South Korea remained the largest coal receiver from Canada, with imports of 0.63 MnT in Feb’19. Imports were 34% higher on the month from 0.47 MnT in Jan’19, also rising 2% Y-o-Y.
Japan emerged as the second-largest coal importer in Feb’19, wherein the country had taken nearly identical volume as that of South Korea.
Japanese coal import from Canada grew 54% M-o-M to 0.63 MnT, which was also 37% higher on the year from 0.46 MnT in Feb’18.
US, was the third-largest coal receiver in Feb’19, despite recording 24% drop in monthly coal imports.
Taiwan, Turkey, India, Vietnam and China were the other major coal receivers from Canada in Feb’19.
