Canada: Coal Exports Down 13% M-o-M in Jul’17

Canadian coal export has decreased 13% M-o-M to 2.72 MnT in Jul’17, in comparison with 3.13 MnT coal exported in Jun’17, according to the customs data.

Exports were also down by 13% Y-o-Y in Jul’17, as the country had exported almost same coal quantity of 3.13 MnT back in Jul’16 as that in Jun’17.

Total coal exported by Canada stood 19.77 MnT during Jan’17-Jul’17, showing a minor improvement of 3% in comparison with 19.26 MnT coal exported during the same period in 2016.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Canada has exported only two coal grades during the month namely-Bituminous coal and Pet Coke, with Bituminous coal having a share of more than 90% in the country’s total exports.

While, exports of Bituminous coal fell 9% M-o-M to 2.48 MnT in Jul’17, exports of Pet Coke had dropped 38% M-o-M during the same period.

Major Coal Importers:
China overtook South Korea and Japan to become the top coal importer from Canada in Jul’17. Both China and India have increased their imports from Canada in order to combat supply disruptions which often affects their coal requirement.

While, China’s coal imports were affected by supply tightness in Australia and Indonesia in the past months, India too have suffered from supply disruption and the fluctuating price trends from Australian coal market.

China’s coal imports have increased 68% M-o-M to 0.69 MnT in Jul’17, which were also 17% higher on the year compared with 0.59 MnT in Jul’16.

India’s monthly coal imports from Canada have zoomed to 0.52 MnT in Jul’17, compared with 0.08 MnT in Jun’17.

South Korea, the third-largest coal importer in Jul’17, suffered a decline of 60% in monthly coal imports. While on the yearly basis, imports increased 57% to 0.33 MnT in Jul’17 compared with 0.21 MnT in Jul’16.
