Recent trade statistics released by Brazil Customs show that the country has exported around 35.11 MnT iron ore in May’17. Iron ore exports by Brazil have increased sharply by 46% M-o-M in May’17 against 24.05 MnT in Apr’17.
The exports have gone up by 3% Y-o-Y as well for the month of May which were at 34.01 MnT in May’16.
There was a marginal increase in Brazil iron ore export for the first five months of the year compared to a year ago and it stood at 149.4 MnT against 148.23 MnT between Jan’16 To May’16.
Monthly average iron ore export price fell sharply by 31%
The average export price for Brazilian iron ore in May’17 was around USD 47/MT, FoB Brazil, down by USD 21/MT from Apr’17 as it was USD 67.5/MT, FoB Brazil. However, on Y-o-Y basis, average export prices rose by USD 7.5/MT against USD 39.5/MT, FoB Brazil in May’16.
Vale accounted for 82% share in Brazilian iron ore exports in May’17
According to data provided by Inchcape Shipping Services, Brazil, – the country exported 32.93 MnT iron ore via sea route. Vale, the world’s largest iron ore producer exported around 82% of iron ore via sea route. In May’17, the miner exported 27.13 MnT iron ore via sea route, CSN – 2.63 MnT, Anglo American – 2.12 MnT and Trafiguara – 1.06 MnT.

China, the largest iron ore importer of Brazilian iron ore imported around 54% of total Brazilian exports in May’17 via sea route, followed by Japan, Netherlands and Malaysia .
Ponta Da Madeira accounted for 35% share in May’17 Brazil iron ore exports – 11.46 MnT iron ore was exported from Brazil’s Ponta Da Madeira. Other major ports for Brazilian iron ore export were Tubarao port and Guaiba port.
