Brazil: Iron Ore Exports Hit Record High In Last Six months

Recent trade statistics released by Brazil Customs show that the country has exported a total of 38.98 MnT iron ore & pellets in May’18. The May’18 exports have increased by 51% M-o-M as against 25.88 MnT in Apr’18. On yearly basis, the exports have witnessed increase of 11% as against 35.11 MnT in May’17.

China accounts for around 50% of Brazilian iron ore exports, amidst stricter regulations in China, buyers prefer to buy low alumina Brazilian iron ore (Carajas fines) resulted still mills are using the high-grade material.

Out of the total quantity of 38.98 MnT exports, 32.18 MnT stood iron ore (83% of total May’18 exports) recording 39% increase against 23.10 MnT in Apr’18. Remaining 6.80 MnT exports were pellets, depicting growth of more than twice M-o-M compared to Apr’18 exports at 2.78 MnT.

For the duration Jan-May’18, total iron ore & pellet exports recorded at 149.04 MnT almost stable on yearly basis compared to 150.21MnT in the same period last year (Jan-May’17) .Out of the total quantity of 149.04 MnT, 131.66MnT stood iron ore and remaining 17.38 MnT being pellet.

Vale iron ore exports surge 42% in May’18:

Vale, the world’s largest iron ore producer exported around 29.12 MnT iron ore via sea route in May’18, up 42% against previous month exports at 20.56MnT. CSN stood the second largest exporter at 2.78 MnT (up 52% M-o-M)

China iron ore imports from Brazil increased 53% M-o-M:

China, largest importer of Brazilian iron ore contributed 63% of total Brazilian exports via sea route in May’18. The imports recorded a significant increase by 53% M-o-M in May’18 at 20.23 MnT against Apr’18 imports at 13.26 MnT. Netherland stood the second largest importer at 2.41 MnT (up four folds M-o-M) followed by South Korea at 1.52 MnT (up more than twice M-o-M) and Portugal at 1.20 MnT.

For Jan-May’18, China marked the largest importer at 82.31MnT (contributing 63% of total exports), followed by Japan at 5.67 MnT and Malaysia 4.69MnT

In May’18, France and United Kingdom depicted a significant rise in Brazillian iron ore imports at 1.14 MnT (up more than three folds), and 0.73 MnT (up by more than two folds) respectively.

Ponta Da Madeira contributed half of Brazilian exports in Apr’18

Ponta Da Madeira accounted for 53% of total Brazilian export in May’18 at 17.21 MnT (up 46% M-o-M), followed by Rio De Janeiro at 7.58 MnT (24% share) and Tubarao Port at 22% export share.
