Iron ore major BHP Group has started production at the 80 mn t per annum South Flank Project in central Pilbara in Western Australia, as per latest reports. Together with the existing Mining Area C, South Flank will form the largest operating iron ore hub in the world producing 145 mn t every year. It is set to replace BHP’s Yandi mine which is nearing its end of life. South Flank’s high-quality ore will increase Western Australia’s average iron ore grade from Fe 61% to Fe 62%, and the overall proportion of lump from 25% to 30-33%.
