On 24 Dec’18, the Steel Smelting Shop (SMS-2) of SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has achieved its highest single-day production of 51 rail bloom heats (6,020 tonnes) amid higher demand by the Indian Railways, company said in its press release.
It is the highest ever Rail Bloom production in a single day since the inception of the shop. The previous best production in a single day was of 46 Bloom Heats on 19th June 2018. It was a historic day for SMS-2 as Bloom Caster-5 and Combi Casters- 3 and 4 were all in operation simultaneously for the whole day. BSP CEO AK Rath personally congratulated the entire SMS 2 team for the record production of rail blooms.
In view of the increasing demand for rails, Slab Caster-3 in SMS 2 was converted to Combi Caster to increase Rail bloom production. And now after the joining of SMS-3, efforts are being made to stabilise and augment production of blooms to the desired level at the earliest.
With this conversion and other initiatives of the management, now SMS-2 & SMS-3 will be able to cater to the increasing demands of RSM (RAIL & Steel Mill) and URM (Universal Rail Mill) which in turn will help in fulfilling the demand of Indian Railways and also achieve the production targets for FY 19.
SAIL has the highest rail making capacity of 2 MTPA at BSP. As a part of SAIl-Bhilai Steel Plant’s modernization programme, new URM has been established at the plant at a cost of about INR 1,200 crore that had scaled up plant’s total capacity to 7 MTPA and the commercial production of 130 metre long rails from the new Universal Rail Mill began in November last year.
The four finishing mills of SAIl’s Bhilai Steel Plant includes Plate Mill, Rail and Structure Mill, Merchant Mill and Wire Rod Mill.
On 13 December this year, SAIL has clocked its best ever hot metal production in a single day at 55,282 tonnes. The PSU is ramping up production from its new units and is focussed on operating at its rated capacity after the commissioning of all its new blast furnaces at three of its integrated steel plants – Durga, Rourkela Steel Plant, Kalyani, IISCO steel plant and Mahamaya, Bhilai steel plant.
