Bangladesh scraps 10 major coal-fired power plants

Bangladesh has announced the closure of at least 10 major coal-fired power plants as the country is aiming to generate 40% of its electricity from renewable energy sources, Bangladesh’s state minister for power and energy said. The country would import hydropower from Nepal and Bhutan. The scrapped power plants account for 8,451 MW of power generation, including a massive plant of 1,320 MW located on the ecologically fragile Maheshkhali Island, and a 1,200 MW project set to be constructed by a Bangladeshi-Japanese joint venture, as per reports.
