Bangladesh: Green chilli imports from India resume via Bhomra Land Port

  • Around 100 t of Indian green chillies imported will ease supply situation
  • Rain-hit crop lifts prices above BDT 250/kg; continued imports expected

Bangladesh has resumed green chilli imports from India through the Bhomra Land Port in Satkhira, with around 100 tonnes (t) entering the country on the first day to address the sharp rise in domestic prices caused by weather-related supply disruptions. A total of 10 trucks carrying Indian green chillies arrived by Monday evening and, after completing customs formalities and payment of duties, the consignments are being dispatched to wholesale markets across the country. Traders expect continued imports to improve availability and help cool prices within the next few days.

First shipment boosts market supply

The first consignment comprised 10 trucks, each carrying approximately 9-11 t of green chillies, taking total imports to about 100 t. The shipments were cleared through customs before being released for distribution across Bangladesh’s wholesale markets.

Importers indicated that the initial shipment followed the approval for imports and that supplies would be moved quickly into the domestic market. Market participants expect additional imports in the coming days, which could gradually improve supply conditions and reduce price pressure.

Rain damage tightens domestic availability

Continuous rainfall has submerged green chilli fields across Satkhira and several neighbouring districts, significantly affecting production and reducing market arrivals. The weather-related crop losses have led to a sharp supply shortage in domestic markets.

The reduced availability has driven prices sharply higher, with green chillies rising from around BDT 50/kg just 15 days ago to over BDT 250/kg currently. Local traders believe the arrival of imported produce will increase market availability and support a gradual correction in prices if imports continue.

Outlook

The resumption of green chilli imports from India is expected to provide immediate relief to Bangladesh’s domestic market by improving short-term supply. While continued imports could help ease prices from current elevated levels, the pace of price correction will depend on the volume of incoming shipments and the recovery of domestic production after weather-related disruptions.
