Bangladesh Coal Imports

Bangladesh: Coal Imports Down 27% M-o-M in Nov’19

Coal shipments taken by Bangladesh have receded from the record intake registered in the previous month, to mark a fall of 27% during Nov’19.

Data compiled by CoalMint Research indicates that imports by the country stood 772,960 MT in Nov’19 as against 1,061,867 MT in Oct’19. Though, coal intake had witnessed an exponential rise of 382% Y-o-Y from 160,244 MT noted in Nov’18.

The fall in monthly shipments was majorly attributed to the decline in coal receipt from South Africa, where a surge in prices had lowered the intake from the buyers. Notably, Bangladesh’s coal sourcing from Africa was down 85% on the month to 55,000 MT in Nov’19 compared with 375,216 MT in Oct’19.

On the other hand, coal imports from the major supplier-Indonesia, was noted 6% higher on the month at 659,880 MT in Nov’19.

In the midst of temporary suspension of domestic coal supplies to local buyers, Bangladesh has witness a significant growth in coal imports. Notably, the country has already overtaken the import total for CY18, during the first 10 month of CY19.

The signs of immediate resumption of coal supplies remain grim, as asserted by the data provided by Barapukuria mining company which highlights that the sum of 3546.52 MT coal produced on 10 Dec’19 was solely supplied to the Bangladesh power development board.

Bangladesh chiefly procures its coal shipments at Chittagong port; however, the country has planned to land part coal shipments through Payra port to cater the requirement of the new 1320 MW power station which is slated to come online in Jan’20.
