Bangladesh: Bulk scrap inquiries remain strong; deals reported

Bulk imported scrap market in Bangladesh remained active with bookings being reported from Japan, Brazil in the last one week. Also a few bulk bookings from the US are under negotiations, trade sources reported SteelMint. Currently, bulk offers for HMS from USA origin are being quoted at $330/t CFR level.

Confirmed trades – 

Firm containerised scrap offers

  • SteelMint’s assessment of containerized shredded 211 scrap from UK/European origins stands at $335-340/t CFR Chittagong, firm against last week.
  • Containerised HMS 1&2 (80:20) from UK/Europe is being offered in the range of $315-318/t CFR Chittagong level, up by $5 w-o-w.

However mid-sized mills opted to wait and watch for further price clarity, while suppliers are holding back their materials and expecting that offers may go up further.

Billet offers remain firm –  Billet offers of smaller mills remained firm, however, demand was reported dull with bids being reported at lower than current offers.

  • Billet prices in Dhaka region remained firm at BDT 41,500-42,000/t exw Dhaka, while buyers’ asking for BDT 40,500-41,000/t level.
  • Local shipyard scrap price almost remained steady and being quoted at BDT 30,000-30,500/t ex yard Chittagong, stable against last week
