Bangladesh bulk ferrous scrap imports witnessed a sharp fall by 68% on a monthly basis. The country imported a total of 93,190 MT of scrap in Jan’20 as against 2,89,091 MT of imports registered in Dec’19. This is the lowest quantity imported by the country since April’19, as per vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint.
A total of 5 bulk vessels arrived at birth in Jan’20. On yearly premises too, the imports witnessed a sharp decrease by 61% Y-o-Y in Jan’20, as against 2,36,783 MT of scrap in Jan’19.
Japan supplied 3 vessels carrying 34,715 MT of bulk ferrous scrap in Jan’20, with 37% of share in total scrap imported by Bangladesh in Jan’20. Followed by other prominent suppliers – USA and Australia with 1 vessel each, carrying 30,999 MT (33% share) and 27,476 MT (29% share) respectively.
Coal: Coal imports to Bangladesh have slightly increased in Jan’20 by 3 % M-o-M to 9,64,422 MT as compared to 9,64,422MT imported in Dec’19. Indonesia remained the largest coal supplier to Bangladesh with 13 vessels carrying 6,74,300 MT bulk coal in Jan’20 with a 70% share. Followed by South Africa with 3 vessels carrying 1,65,256 MT (down 50% M-o-M) with a 17% share.
Coal import from Russia has observed in Jan’20 since last import was registered in Oct’18 at 55,000 MT. Imports from Malaysia & Netherlands were reported at 55,000 MT and 43,450 MT respectively in Jan’20, and notably, this is the first time Netherlands exported coal to Bangladesh.
Pig Iron: The bulk pig iron imports to Bangladesh recorded at 29,486 MT in Jan’20, as against 29,500 MT imported in Dec’19. All bulk shipments were recorded from India in the month.
Steel Coils: Bulk imports of steel coils witnessed fall in Jan’20 as the country imported 73,007 MT, decreasing by 30% M-o-M as against 1,03,698 MT imported in Nov’19. Japan supplied the largest quantity of coils with a 42% share. Followed by Malaysia (25,310 MT) & Myanmar (17,232 MT) with 35% and 24% respectively.
HBI: Imports of hot briquetted iron to Bangladesh registered for the first time in Jan’20. A total of 1,00,216 MT of HBI imported from the USA.
