Bangladesh’s bulk ferrous scrap imports fall by 18% on a monthly basis in May’20. The country imported a total of 210,674 t of scrap in May’20 as against 255,659 t imported in Apr’20, as per vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint.
On a yearly basis, scrap imports observed a significant increase by 107% in May’20, in contrast with 101,911 t of scrap imported in May’19. A total of 9 bulk vessels arrived at berth in May’20.
Japan supplied four bulk scrap cargo vessels, carrying 74,300 t of scrap, increasing by 13% M-o-M. Another prominent supplier was Australia supplied three vessels with 69,674 t of scrap, witnessing a sharp hike of 116% on a monthly basis. Imports from USA fall by 47% M-o-M as it exported only 66,700 t in May’20.
Coal: Coal imports to Bangladesh observed a sharp fall by 72% M-o-M to 171,746 t in May’20 as against 602,868 t imported in Apr’20. Notably, this is the lowest quantity of coal imports recorded in the last two months. Indonesia supplied the largest quantity with four vessels, carrying a total of 112,195 t of coal. Another prominent supplier was South Africa, which supplied one vessel with 59,551 t of coal.
Pig Iron: Bulk pig iron imports to Bangladesh recorded at only 29,863 t in May’20, as nil volume was registered a month ago in Apr’20. All bulk shipments were imported from India in the month.
Steel Coils: Bulk imports of steel coils witnessed a fall by 10% to 108,045 t of coils May’20 in contrast with 119,534 t imported in Apr’20. Japan exported 92,520 t of coils in May’20, decreasing by 6% M-o-M. Other prominent suppliers were India and South Korea which supplied one vessel each.
HBI: Imports of hot briquetted iron to Bangladesh registered in May’20, after gap of almost three months. A total of 62,500 t of HBI imported from Russia and India.
