Bangladesh’s bulk ferrous scrap imports fell sharply by 42% m-o-m in Jul’ 20, after a record high scrap imports reported a month back. The country imported a total of 184,201 t of scrap in Jul’ 20 as against 315,847 t imported in Jun’ 20, as per vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint. Bangladesh scrap imports may remain slow due to monsoon as well as already having sufficient inventory with steel mills and rapidly weak demand in the Bangladeshi finished steel market.
On a yearly basis, the bulk scrap imports observed a slight rise by 5% y-o-y in Jul’ 20 in comparison on 175,884 t in Jul ’19. A total of 8 bulk vessels arrived at birth in Jul’ 20.
Out of the total of 8 bulk vessels arriving in the month, the USA exported 3 bulk scrap cargoes, carrying 91,326 t in Jul ’20, declining by 40% m-o-m. Another major supplier Japan exported 4 vessels with 66,886 t of scrap, significantly down by 21% m-o-m.
Followed by another prominent supplier- New Zealand which supplied 1 vessel, carrying 25,989 t with 14% share in total scrap imported by Bangladesh.
Coal: Coal imports to Bangladesh observed a marginal fell by 5% m-o-m to 51,811 t in Jul’ 20 in contrast with 54,700 t of coal imported in Jun’ 20. Notably, South Africa remained only the supplier of coal to Bangladesh with one vessel carrying 51,881 t in Jul ’20.
It is estimated that coal imports may decrease or suspended in near future due to ahead of monsoon season and low demand from brick industries.
Steel Coils: Bulk imports of steel coils witnessed a decrease in Jul’ 20 as the country imported 66,240 t, down by 46% m-o-m as against 123,492 t of coils imported in Jun’ 20.
Japan supplied largest quantity of coils to Bangladesh with 3 vessels, carrying 56,242 t. Another prominent supplier was Taiwan which exported 1 vessel carrying, 10,000 t in Jul ’20.
A total of 11,205 t of HBI in bulk imported in Jul ‘20, as compared to nil volume was reported last month, whereas, imports of Pig iron reported nil volume in Jul’ 20.
