Baltic dry index slips 5% as Capesize sentiment weakens on softer iron ore demand

The Baltic dry bulk index fell by 5% (127 points) d-o-d to 2,430 on 10 Dec. Weaker iron ore chartering, softer Chinese steel mill demand, increased vessel availability, and reduced fresh cargo inquiries collectively pressured rates and drove the BCI lower.

  • Capesize: The BCI fell 7.5% (347 points) to 4,284.
  • Panamax: The BPI decreased 1.2% (22 points) to 1,764.
  • Supramax: The BSI down by 1% (14 points) to 1,405.
