Baltic Dry Index rises as Capesize and Panamax strengthen on firm cargo demand

  • Capesize rebounds on firm iron ore demand and tighter tonnage
  • Supramax remains rangebound amid weak minor bulk demand

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) increased by 26 points (0.85%) to 3,083 on 10 August, from 3,057 on 6 August, extending its firm trend post Singapore Day holidays. The market remained supported by improving sentiment across the larger vessel segments, with Capesize and Panamax freight rates gaining, while Supramax continued to trade largely sideways.

The Capesize segment regained momentum, supported by healthy iron ore shipment programmes and relatively balanced vessel availability. Meanwhile, Panamax continued its upward trajectory, with sustained coal demand in the Pacific and steady grain activity in the Atlantic providing support. In contrast, Supramax remained subdued, as weak minor bulk demand and sufficient vessel availability limited rate gains.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Increased 1.1% (53 points) to 5,105 on 10 August, from 5,052 on 6 August. The recovery indicates renewed strength in the segment after the previous session’s correction. Firm iron ore cargo flows from Australia and Brazil, together with relatively balanced tonnage availability, continued to underpin freight sentiment.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Rose 1.4% (31 points) to 2,306, from 2,275 on 6 August, extending its recent gains. The index reached its highest level since 2 June, supported by steady coal shipments from the Pacific and healthy grain exports from the Atlantic. Continued chartering activity across both basins is keeping the Panamax market firmly supported.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Declined marginally by 0.3% (5 points) to 1,603, from 1,608 on 6 August. The segment remained largely rangebound, with subdued demand for minor bulk commodities such as steel products and fertilizers offsetting any support from cargo activity. Ample vessel availability also continued to cap upside potential.

Outlook

BigMint expects the BDI to remain firm in the coming week, supported by healthy Capesize and Panamax cargo programmes, particularly from Australia and Brazil, alongside relatively tight prompt vessel availability. However, the outlook may remain mixed across vessel segments, with Supramax fundamentals softer amid subdued minor-bulk activity and comfortable tonnage supply.

Upside could be limited if fresh cargo enquiries slow or vessel availability improves. Firm bunker costs may continue to support freight levels by keeping voyage economics elevated, while weather-related disruptions and changes in major loading programmes could add volatility.
