Baltic dry index hits over 1-month low on weak demand, rising tonnage

The Baltic dry bulk index fell by 2.3% (48 points) d-o-d to a one-month low of 2,023 on 19 Dec. The index eased as weak coal and grain demand hit Panamax rates, while ample tonnage, slower iron ore fixing, and thin year-end cargo volumes weighed across segments.

  • Capesize: BCI dropped by 1.4% (51 points) to 3,624.
  • Panamax: BPI fell by 4.8% (66 points) to 1,323.
  • Supramax: BSI decreased by 2.8% (36 points) to 1,222.
