Baltic Dry Index falls nearly 3% d-o-d; Capesize leads broad-based decline

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) fell by 99 points (2.7%) d-o-d to 3,521 on 10 September 2026 from 3,620 on 9 September, marking its first decline after two consecutive sessions of gains. The downtrend was led by Capesize, while Panamax also weakened marginally. Supramax was the only major segment to post a gain.

The broad-based weakness across the larger vessel segments points to a softer near-term freight environment, although the resilience in Supramax indicates that demand in the smaller-size segment remains relatively firm. Capesize remains the key swing factor for overall BDI momentum, with the sharp pullback reversing part of the recent recovery.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): The Capesize index fell by 278 points (4.3%) d-o-d to 6,122, from 6,400, snapping a two-day uptrend. The decline was the main drag on the BDI and reflects weaker freight activity across major Capesize markets.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): The Panamax index declined by 5 points (0.2%) d-o-d to 2,409, from 2,414. The marginal drop indicates broadly stable fundamentals, although the segment continues to lack strong upward momentum.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): The Supramax index increased by 9 points (0.5%) d-o-d to 1,713, from 1,704. The modest gain provided some support to the broader index and highlights comparatively resilient activity in the smaller vessel segment.

Outlook

The near-term outlook has turned cautious, with Capesize likely to remain the main determinant of BDI direction. The sharp reversal in Capesize after its recent gains suggests that freight momentum remains vulnerable to fluctuations in cargo activity and regional vessel availability. Panamax remains largely range-bound, while continued Supramax gains could provide some downside cushion. Overall, sustained recovery in the BDI will require renewed strength in the larger vessel segments.
