Baltic Dry Index extends rally for 4th consecutive day, led by Capesize, Panamax

  • Capesize index strengthens on firmer chartering activity
  • Panamax recovers on improving demand for coal, grain carriers

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) strengthened on 25 August, rising for the fourth consecutive day by 44 points (1.5%) d-o-d to 2,926 from 2,882 on 24 August. The gain was led by a firm rise in Capesize, while Panamax also advanced and Supramax remained broadly stable.

The market showed broad-based improvement across vessel segments, with Capesize and Panamax both recording firm gains and driving the overall rise in the BDI. Supramax also edged higher, albeit marginally, indicating that the recovery was not confined to the larger segments. The continued advances across all three vessel classes point to firmer near-term freight sentiment and improving demand conditions.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Rose by 92 points (2.0%) d-o-d to 4,735 from 4,643, marking a fourth consecutive session of gains, reflecting firmer chartering activity. However, softer iron ore futures amid concerns over rising coke costs and cautious steel demand could temper further upside.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Increased by 35 points (1.6%) d-o-d to 2,166 from 2,131, extending its gains for a third consecutive session. Improving demand for coal and grain carriers and a recovery in Panamax market sentiment.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Edged up by 2 points (0.1%) d-o-d to 1,643 from 1,641, keeping the segment broadly stable. While the d-o-d change was limited, the segment has shown stronger performance over the broader 2026 period, with Supramax freight rates having gained, supported by demand for grains, coal, fertilisers, and other minor bulks.

Outlook

The BDI outlook remains cautiously positive, supported by sustained Capesize strength and continued Panamax gains. However, further upside will depend on cargo enquiry levels, vessel availability and chartering activity across key routes. Supramax stability also remains important for maintaining the broader market momentum.
