- Opening bid premium set at 108%
- Resource security remains key industry focus
Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (BALCO), a Vedanta Group company has emerged as the successful bidder for Odisha’s Karlapat bauxite block, quoting a final bid of 175%, according to market sources.
Located in Kalahandi district, the Karlapat block hosts more than 200 million tonnes (mnt) of bauxite across over 3,100 hectares, making it the largest virgin bauxite resource currently offered in Odisha.
The block was among 11 virgin mineral blocks put up for auction by the Odisha government on 29 May. The final electronic auction witnessed strong participation from leading industry players, reflecting the growing importance of securing captive bauxite resources amid India’s expanding aluminium industry.
Industry participants included Adani Enterprises, Reliance Industries, Hindalco Industries, Vedanta Aluminium, Powermec and Coal India, among others. According to market sources, Adani Enterprises and Vedanta Aluminium were among the key bidders in the final round, with the two companies competing aggressively for the block as bidding intensified.
The auction commenced with an opening bid premium of 108% and witnessed intense competition throughout the e-auction. According to market sources, the bid premium successively crossed 152.40%, 155.75% and 168%, before closing at a final winning premium of 175%.
The 175% premium makes Karlapat the highest-bidded bauxite block in BigMint’s historical auction database, surpassing the previous highest premium of 126.76% quoted for Odisha’s Kutrumali bauxite block, which was awarded to Mundra Aluminium Ltd in February 2023.

The outcome highlights the increasing strategic importance of domestic bauxite resources as India’s aluminium industry prepares for its next phase of growth. As the country advances its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and strengthens domestic manufacturing, long-term access to critical raw materials has become an increasingly important priority for integrated aluminium producers.
With aluminium demand expected to grow across infrastructure, renewable energy, electric vehicles, packaging, transport and defence, captive bauxite resources are increasingly viewed as important for ensuring raw material security, improving cost competitiveness and supporting sustainable capacity expansion.
The Karlapat allocation is expected to have a significant bearing on India’s aluminium raw material landscape, with the successful bidder securing one of the country’s largest undeveloped bauxite deposits. The record premium also underscores the growing competition among industry players to secure long-term domestic bauxite resources amid expectations of sustained aluminium demand growth.
