Australia, one of the largest coking coal exporters in the globe recorded 30 MnT total coal export in Oct’16.
Australian coal exports — both metallurgical and thermal stood at 30 MnT in Oct’16 with a marginal fall by 7% compared to Oct’15 which was 32.4 MnT during the month. As per the SteelMint logistics (vessel line up updates).
Port-wise Shipments in Oct’16
Port of Brisbane, the largest cargo ports of Queensland’s shipped the highest quantity about 8 MnT to different destinations in Oct’16, followed by DBCT and Gladstone as the 2nd and 3rd largest coal delivery ports in Oct’16.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Export Destinations Oct’16
The country has been exporting more than 85% of coal to its top 5 export destinations every year such as Japan (33%), China (18%), Korea (16%), India (12%) and Taipei (8%).
Japan is one of the largest buyers of Australian coal, out of the total yearly export, the country shipped about 30% of coal to Japan. In Oct’16, Japan took about 10.2 MnT coal; Down by 7% compared to last year Oct’15.
China, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 5.3 MnT coal in Oct’16. The nation’s yearly import from Australia recorded a growth of 3%, which was 5 MnT in Oct’15.
Taiwan, the third-largest coal importer from Australia in Oct’16, imported about 3.1 MnT coal during the month, recorded a growth by 19%, compared to Oct’15.
Australian coal shipments have been rising constantly in 2016 on the wake of increased crude steel production and coal demand globally. Australian coal shipments have hit the highest since Sep’15. Collectively Coking coal prices are also hitting up in the global market as driven by sudden rise in Chinese coal demand. Current offers for premium coking coal crossed the level of USD 310/MT, FoB for Dec’16 shipments.
