According to the vessel-line up data maintained by CoalMint Research, Australian coal shipments have fallen to a seven-month low of 28.09 MnT in Nov’17.
Coal Shipments were down 7% M-o-M from 30.21 MnT in Oct’17. Nov’17 coal export figure is the smallest volume sent in a single month since Apr’17 when Australian coal market was still recovering from the impact of Cyclone Debbie that hit the country in late Mar’17.
Australia is the world’s largest exporter of both thermal and metallurgical grade of coal, and has exported 324.72 MnT coal during Jan’17-Nov’17 as per the data maintained.
Coal movement from Australia’s Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) was affected due to long vessel queue during the month. Moreover, the fall in coal demand from two of its major consumers’ Japan and China, could also be attributed to the decline in monthly coal shipments.
Major Coal Receivers:
Australian coal shipments to Japan fell 13% M-o-M to 9.06 MnT in Nov’17, which was 10.46 MnT in Oct’17.
China was the second-largest coal receiver during the month, however the country witnessed significant fall of 41% in the monthly coal imports in a bid to curb pollution. Chinese coal import was 4.61 MnT in Nov’17.
South Korean coal imports increased 32% M-o-M to 4.43 MnT in Nov’17 compared with 3.35 MnT in Oct’17.
Indian coal imports from Australia also recorded a minor growth of 2% on the month to 3.31 MnT in Nov’17.
