According to the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research, coal shipments exported from Australia has increased 5% on the month to 30.26 MnT in Mar’18, against 28.76 MnT in Feb’18. Export volumes were also 2% higher on the year, compared with coal shipments of 29.71 MnT recorded in Mar’17.
Australian coal exports to its major customers-Japan and China had fallen in Mar’18, while supplies to India and Taiwan had significantly increased during the month.
Japan remained the highest importer of Australian coal in Mar’18, however, imports from the country had came down slightly from 9.51 MnT in Feb’18 to 9.41 MnT in Mar’18.
Chinese coal sourcing from Australia was also down during the month. The country had imported 5.88 MnT coal in Mar’18, which was 5% short than its previous month’s total of 6.21 MnT.
India was the third-largest coal importer in Mar’18, imports rose 19% M-o-M to 4.33 MnT during the month.
Taiwan had recorded remarkable growth of 85% in monthly coal imports from Australia; the country had received 2.89 MnT coal in Mar’18.

Port-wise Coal Shipments:
Newcastle port had handled the highest coal shipments in Mar’18 followed by DBCT, Gladstone, Hay point and Abbot point.
Amongst the major ports, only Abbot point had witnessed a fall in export volume during the month. Coal export from the port was down 7% M-o-M to 2.14 MnT in Mar’18, which was also the lowest monthly total since Aug’17.
