High coal prices seem not to impact coal exports from Australia in the recent past. In Dec’16, coal exports from the continent totaled around 34.8 MnT, which surpassed the imports in Nov’16, at around 29.9 MnT, by approximately 16%, an analysis of the recently released port data shows.
Of the cumulative export during Dec’16, Coking Coal constituted 18.5 MnT, and the rest, 16.3 MnT, was Non Coking Coal.

COUNTRY-WISE COAL EXPORTS
The majority of the Coking Coal exports during the month was to the Asian countries, with Japan, China, India and Korea among the major destinations; followed by Europe.

The export trend in respect to Non Coking Coal during the month also shows that Asian countries were the major destinations, with Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea being the major countries of export.

PORT-WISE COAL EXPORTS
The port data also reveals that the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT) port had handled the highest volume of Coking Coal export traffic during the month, followed by the Gladstone, Hay Point, Abbot Point and Brisbane ports.

While, the major export traffic in respect to Non Coking Coal was handled by the New Castle Port at the PWKS terminal, followed by the New Castle Infrastructure Group(NCIG) and Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals.

PRICE TREND IN DEC’16
In Australia, coal prices had depicted a declining trend in Dec’16 as supply improved gradually. Price were at record highs in Nov’16 due to severe tightness in supply.
