Australia, one of the largest coking coal exporters across the globe witnessed a growth in its monthly coal exports during Nov’16 which stood at 32.19 MnT.
Australian coal exports — both metallurgical and thermal stood at 32.19 MnT in Nov’16 with a rise of 7% compared to Oct’16. Besides, coal exports rise marginally by 1% in Nov’16 from 32.02 MnT in Nov’15 Y-o-Y, as per the latest updates by Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Out of the total exports, the country shipped more than 50% Steam coal to different destinations and rest quantity comprises Hard coking, Semi-Soft coking coal, other metallurgical and Anthracite coal.
During Nov’16, the country has exported 15.98 MnT Steam Coal, 10.10 MnT Hard coking coal, 5.97 MnT semi-soft coking coal while other grades of coal account for 0.14 MnT.

Quantity in MnT
Coal Exports in 2016:
During Jan-Nov’16, the country has shipped a total quantity of 349.02 MnT coal worldwide, down by 1% compared with 353.16 MnT during the corresponding period of previous year.
Major Coal Export Destinations in Nov’16:
The country has been exporting more than 80% of coal to its top 5 export destinations every month. Top importers of Australian grade coal are Japan, China, India, Korea and Taipei.
Japan is the largest buyers of Australian coal as the country’s whole steel industry is largely dependent on Australian imported grades. Out of the total export in the year, the country shipped about 30% of coal to Japan.
Japan took about 9.47 MnT coal in Nov’16; down by 5% compared to last month. Also, yearly coal imports sink by 9%, which was 10.36 MnT in Nov’15.
China, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 7.71 MnT coal in Nov’16, with a rise of 37% compared to 5.62 MnT in Oct’16. Moreover, the nation’s yearly import from Australia recorded a growth of 34%, which was at 5.77 MnT in Nov’15.
India, the third-largest coal importer from Australia in Nov’16, imported about 4.15 MnT coal during the month, recorded a growth of 18% which was 3.51 MnT in Oct’16. Also, imports moved up by 24% Y-o-Y.
