Australian Coal Exports Down 18% in Jan’17

Australia, one of the largest coal exporters in the world, saw coal exports declining in Jan’17 on monthly basis.

Australian coal exports declined by 18% to 28.66 MnT in Jan’17 compared with 34.80 MnT in Dec’16, according to data collected by CoalMint Research from vessel line up details.

Australia majorly exports Metallurgical Coal coal and Thermal coal to various countries in the globe witnessed exports of both the coal types falling in Jan’17.

Country-wise Coal Exports:
The majority of Australia’s metallurgical and thermal coal exports were exported to the Asian region; with Japan emerging as a major coal importer from Australia in Jan’17; followed by China, Korea, India and Taiwan.

Japan imported 9.93 MnT coal in Jan’17; down by 23% against 12.82 MnT in Dec’16.

Coking Coal Exports:
Coking coal exports declined by 16% M-o-M to 15.45 MnT in Jan’17 compared with 18.49 MnT in Dec’16. Japan being the top importer in Jan’17, received 3.77 MnT.

Demand for Australian coking coal has been hampered by excess supply in the market. With surplus supply mounted in the Australian market, producers are trying hard to dispose-off their stocks, thus reducing coal prices. Also, import demand from Chinese buyers has decreased due to increase in coal production.

Prices of the Premium HCC coal have dropped sharply to USD 151.50/MT, FoB Australia; while that of 64 Mid Vol HCC also declined to USD 144.55/MT, FoB Australia.

Non-Coking Coal Exports:
Exports of Non-Coking coal also had fallen by 20% in Jan’17 to 13.12 MnT.Non-Coking coal preferred for power generation is majorly imported by Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China and Russia in Jan’17.

Non-coking coal prices have been falling persistently since last month and have reached USD 78/MT, FoB Newcastle for 6300 GAR coal. With recent supply disruption in Indonesia; coal buyers are now turning towards Australia to meet their demands.

Port-wise Coal Exports:
Kooragang coal terminal (PWKS) shipped a major quantity of coal in Jan’17. PWKS located in New South Wales, Australia exported 7.58 MnT coal in Jan’17, followed by Dalrymple Bay coal terminal (DBCT) from where 5.02 MnT coal was exported.
